The Wharf Garden - A new stretch of planting along the Regent’s Canal in N1 designed by Landscape Designer Miria Harris.
Miria Harris is pleased to announce that on Saturday 16 April 2016 work will begin on The Wharf Garden, a 40 metre stretch of canalside planting in North London.
Combining sections of water planting with sections of planting in raised beds clad alternately with black stained larch and corrugated iron, this canal side garden will not only be for the residents of the canal, but for the pleasure of all who stroll along the public towpath on the opposite side of the canal - visible as it flickers in and out of view between the moored boats in an evolving and cinematic progression.
Located along the south side of the Regents Canal in N1 between New North Road at the west and Whitmore Road at the east, this new canal side garden was commissioned by Davy Jones Locker as part of a private development of two new residential wharfs (Gainsborough and Haggerston Wharfs) providing permanent mooring for over 10 boats. This new development, with festoon lighting, full amenities and bespoke wooden boat sheds also includes a ‘boatel’, where visitors can experience life on the canal first hand. In designing this planting scheme, Harris was keen to create a garden that would be aesthetically pleasing - caught in the reflections of the water and offering different seasons of interest, as well as being a new planted environment encouraging and supporting local biodiversity. Care will be taken to ensure that none of the species introduced to the canal are invasive. The design aims to result in a city garden that would have made the great 18th century London gardener, Thomas Fairchild, proud.
Included in the planting scheme are such water plants as: Typha lugdunensis, a non-invasive variety of reedmace, with roots that absorb nutrients and pollutants, Cyperus longus, our native Sweet Gallengale which provides plenty of habitat opportunities and Lythrum salicaria, our native Loosestrife - beloved by bees, hoverflies and butterflies as pollinators when in flower. Among the soil based plants included are: Aquilegia vulgaris, our native columbine, Foeniculum vulgare Purpureum (Bronze Fennel) and Geranium phaeum Lily Lovell (Dusky Cranesbill) - a tall perennial geranium that reaches a height of 80cm and flowers from May to June.
The planting of The Wharf Garden will take place on Saturday 16 April and will be carried out by the new community of these two wharfs, the residents themselves, under the guidance of Harris.
