Sue Arnott is going the extra mile to raise funds for her favourite charity. 26 of them to be precise because Sue, from Bentham, North Yorkshire, is taking part in the Barcelona Marathon on 13 March to raise funds for the Dr Hadwen Trust (DHT), the UK’s leading non-animal medical research charity.
Sue hopes to raise at least £1,000 as part of the DHT’s ‘Grand Challenge’, whereby the charity hopes to raise £180,000 to fund a brain tumour research project.
Said Sue: “This means a lot to me for two reasons. The first is that a few years ago I lost a good friend, June, who died from a brain tumour after a long struggle with the disease.”
“The second is that the Dr Hadwen Trust has been the driving force in funding advanced scientific research methods where experimentation using animals has been replaced with more human-relevant ones.”
Sue is a member of Bentham Beagles Running Club and she will be joined in her marathon effort by fellow club members Linda Morris, Zoe MacDonald, Diane Armstrong, Kate Morris and Jill Noble.
Said Danielle Goodwin, Fundraising Development Officer at the Dr Hadwen Trust: “Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer, yet just 1% of the national spend on cancer research is allocated to brain tumour research. We think that this is unacceptable.”
“Thanks to Sue and to others undertaking the Grand Challenge we hope to raise enough money to fund a major research project into this devastating disease. We wish her and her Bentham Beagles all the very best for their marathon effort.”
