New Art Exhibition - "Words" - Art Inspired by Poetry & Prose

On now on until April 24th., Obsidian Art (www.obsidianart.co.uk) ART EXHIBITION – “Words” – at Obsidian Art Gallery
From 25 March to 24 April 2016.

Obsidian Art’s latest exhibition takes its inspiration from the written word, featuring art inspired by poetry & prose.

This exciting exhibition includes a wonderful range of art including paintings, original printmaking, glass, ceramics, textiles, jewellery and paper sculpture by selected artists and makers from all over the country.

The exhibition was inspired by World Book Night, an annual event launched in 2011 with the aim of encouraging reading. Artists were invited to submit pieces that incorporated text or had been inspired from prose or poetry. The resulting exhibition displays the selected art alongside the quote or poem that inspired it, and includes a huge variety of both mediums and styles, and a span of literature including classics such as Shakespeare, Wordsworth and Blake, and also contemporary pieces.

Fifty British artists and makers have been selected to take part in the exhibition from over two hundred entries. These include Annet Stirling, who has created a wonderful series of steel panels with laser-cut poems and quotes, engraved cast glass by Julia Hayward, fascinating and original paper art sculpture by several artists including Alexi Francis, beautiful glass using reclaimed books by Alx Creations, paintings incorporating inspiring poetry by Sam Cannon, and clever miniature book jewellery by Eunice Beeching – perfect for book and art lovers alike!

Taking inspiration from this year of multiple literary anniversaries including the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death, and the 200th anniversary of Charlotte Bronte's birth.

Gallery owner, Trisha Woodcock, says, “There was a great response to our call for entries for this exhibition; many artists found it an inspiring theme top create a piece of art for, and we’re really excited by the resulting show. We ran a Poetry themed exhibition last year and found the response from visitors was really positive.”
“The text incorporated in the work or displayed alongside the art adds an extra element beyond a normal art exhibition, and it is fascinating to see how the artists have selected and interpreted the words. Prose and poems selected for the show include humour, life and love. Hopefully there is something to make you pause and contemplate.”
