the Malton Dickensian Festival
Direct from the London stage, the acclaimed one-man show of A Christmas Carol by RSC actor, Dominic Gerrard, premiers in Malton this December.
An extra show has been announced for the show on Friday December 20 at 8,30pm due to audience demand after the 6.30pm show sold out.
Tickets are limited with just 50 seats for the performance, which is staged in the intimate and candle-lit setting of York House, next to the Talbot Hotel.
Directed by former Globe Associate Tim Carroll, this magical re-telling of Dickens’s classic Christmas story features puppetry from Mandarava. Dominic’s one-man performance of A Christmas Carol plays each December in London. This sixty-minute adaptation follows close to Dickens’ classic narrative, revolving around a central puppet of Scrooge.
The show has attracted acclaim with the Independent on Sunday claiming it: “A worthy rival to Simon Callow’s one man Carol.” One reviewer declared: “I came away transfixed and am even writing this with a smile on my face … please please please go to see this if you can.” The Stage reviewed the show saying: “Gerrard is such a gifted and charismatic performer ... The contrast of emotions he sweeps the audience through is quite astonishing – we’re feeling boisterous one minute, and experiencing Scrooge’s palpable loneliness the next.”
This story will transport you, stave by stave, through Scrooge’s life as he journeys out, one bleak Christmas night, with the ghosts that have been sent to reclaim him.
The great, great, great granddaughter of Charles Dickens, Lucinda Hawksley, said: “I was spellbound by Dominic Gerrard's one-man show of A Christmas Carol. It's the perfect way to begin your Christmas.”
Clair Challenor-Chadwick, MD of Cause UK which is hosting the event, said: “Dominic Gerrard is bringing the show to Malton after his performances in London at Leicester Square, Soho Theatre and at Dickens’ London home with The Charles Dickens Museum. We’re really proud to be bringing a show of this calibre to Malton to celebrate the town’s long association with Charles Dickens.”
The performance is suitable for children over ten years of age.
