Berwins Salon North has announced its summer line-up promising scintillating insights into big questions, including the meaning of life, the movies and our minds.
Some of the UK’s leading thinkers from the worlds of neuroscience, comedy, journalism and music will present TED-style talks on the themes, ‘Narrate, Celebrate and Illuminate’.
The first Salon, ‘Narrate’, on 21 June features Professor of Paleoclimatology, Mark Maslin, who will tell the story of humans and why we are the only bipedal ape that survived. Comedian and broadcaster, Viv Groskop, claims to have discovered the meaning of life in the Russian classics, she’ll explain how to use these stories to navigate life. Finally, Anthropologist, Jason Hickel, explores the truth behind the idea that poverty can be eradicated by 2020.
Martin Whincup, Marketing Manager at Berwins, said: “We’re incredibly proud to support Salon North and to have witnessed it grow into such a success as one of the town’s most talked about nights out. It engages with what it means to be human, philosophically, emotionally and intellectually, so it is a great alignment for Berwins, especially our Life team that supports people through different stages of life and the key decisions we make, from marriage and children to later life.”
‘Celebrate’ on 26 July features TV presenter, award-winning journalist, screenwriter and irrepressible commentator Rick Edwards who joins Editor-at-Large of the New Scientist Dr Michael Brooks to delve into the science behind our favourite films. Classic FM presenter Jennifer Nelson celebrates Saturday Night at the Movies, exploring why film scores are eternally memorable. Dr Simon Zagorski-Thomas, the UK’s leading academic in the field of music production, will share the secrets of the studio.
Completing the Berwins Salon North summer extravaganza on 13 September is ‘Illuminate’.
Darren Henley OBE, chief executive of Arts Council England, passionately believes creativity matters. He’ll explore the essential role of creativity in human enterprise. Award-winning journalist Caspar Henderson brings awe to life with A New Map of Wonders. Through natural history, philosophy, art, religion, neuroscience and nanotechnology, learn how to find the fascinating in the everyday. Finally, grapple with one of the hardest questions of our time - what does it mean to be conscious? Celebrated neurologist and neuropsychologist Dr Hannah Critchlow switches on the ultimate light on grey matter.
Martin added: “It’s really a remarkable line-up this summer with unique opportunities to hear from some of the leading thinkers of our time. We believe it’s important to support the Arts in the community in which we live and work.”
