AEGON Ilkley Trophy wins Sporting Highlight of the Year

ILKLEY Lawn Tennis & Squash Club's AEGON Ilkley Trophy has won Sporting Highlight of the Year at the Provident Bradford Sports Awards.

The ATP Challenger and ITF Women's Futures tournament saw off competition from the Bradford Dragonboat Festival and Bradford City Runs to be named 2016’s Sporting Highlight at last Thursday’s event at the Bradford Hotel.

Sell-out crowds watched Taiwan's Yen-Hsun Lu and Russia's Evgeniya Rodina win the respective men's and women's singles at last year’s pre-Wimbledon event at Ilkley, whilst the newly refurbished £2.5million clubhouse provided the perfect backdrop for the tournament.

ILTSC's general manager Charlie Maunder, who accepted the Award from sponsors Provident, said: "It is fantastic for us and for tennis that we have won it.

"It is a not only a reward for the work that the volunteers and club members have put in over the past two or three years, but for the past ten years that we can host such a high-calibre event involving world-class players."

The AEGON Ilkley Trophy was also nominated for 2015 Sporting Highlight at last year’s inaugural Provident Bradford Sports Awards, but was beaten by Bradford City's 4-2 FA Cup victory at Chelsea.

Tickets are now on sale for 2017’s Aegon Ilkley Trophy.
