Coronation Street Storyline Highlights Issue of Male Rape Reports Sussex-based Mankind
Mankind, a Sussex-based charity that provides confidential support services for men who have been affected by unwanted sexual experiences, is applauding Coronation Street bosses for not only highlighting the issue of male rape but for also portraying the ongoing problem of silence surrounding victims.
Research tells us that across Sussex, Brighton and Hove there are up to 30,000 men who have been affected by unwanted sexual violence. For men, sexual abuse attacks the very idea of masculinity or maleness, and as a result find it difficult to speak out. With high profile programmes, such as Coronation Street, tackling these issues it helps break the taboo and encourages men to speak out.
Since the first screening of the storyline, the Male Survivors Partnership received a 1700 per cent increase in calls from male survivors in the first week, and the team at Mankind are encouraging men in the local area that they too can break their silence and get the support and help that is available for them at Mankind.
Martyn Sullivan, CEO of Mankind and co-founder of the Male Survivors Partnership said: “We really welcome and thank programmes like Coronation Street tackling such a sensitive issue and bringing it to an audience which doesn’t typically talk about or understand the issues around male rape. It encourages people to think differently and for men who have been affected, to see that this happens to other men and that help is available for them.
“At Mankind we know that this is an issue that has affected 1 in 6 men and we wanted to take the opportunity to remind people that we are here to help and support them.”
Mankind will be at this year’s Brighton Fringe, England’s largest arts festival, and will be hosting a number of events. For further details or information on Mankind please visit the website http://mkcharity.org/welcome/ or follow on Twitter @MankindCharity or Facebook @Mankind Counselling
